Throughout history, this small town near Nerja, has been a crossroads of different cultures. Today it is known for its tropical fruits such as avocado, custard apple or mango and for being a being a popular tourist spot on the Granada coast due to its attractive beaches and surroundings.

Since it was founded by the Phoenicians, who discovered a paradise on its coast with magnificent fishing and in its mountains that were rich in copper and silver, each civilisation that inhabited it has left its mark. With the Romans it became one of the most important commercial colonies on the coast and the Arabs left their castle and some watchtowers. The monument to Abderramán I, the first emir of Cordoba, commemorates this era.
