A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Radio España starts its programmes on the 10th of November of 1924. This was just after the government, on June this very year, gave an order that approved a specific rule that granted the first radio licenses. Till then, only some radios had broadcasted with a relative regularity. The engineer Matías Balsera was the pioneer of these programmes, done since 1912, that called the attention of the very father of the radio, Marconi.
It’s been a century since those first programmes and, nowadays, we can confirm that Spanish Broadcasting has an excellent quality, as it is proved by the fact that, after the omnipresent television, it is the first media chosen by the Spanish population. According to the EGM (general media study).
Within the different radio channels we have to differentiate, on the first place, between public radio (national as well as autonomic) and private. On the other hand, we should also differentiate between the so called generalist radio and the thematic one.
GENERALIST RADIO
Among the radios generalistas, the first channels at a national level are; SER, COPE, Onda Cero, Punto Radio and RNE Radio 1. The programming of these channels is based on news, general or political debates, sports and thematic programmes, being those of the morning time zone, the ones with a higher rate of audience. As it happens in the press, although radio programmes show a great degree of plurality and objectivity, they use to be ascribed to a certain sociopolitical ideal.
RNE (Radio Nacional de España) this is the public generalist radio of the state, and it has several channels. Among them Radio 5 outstands by its programing, based on the continuous broadcast of the last news and micro-programmes about a wide variety of issues of a great diversity, of cultural and social themes. A lot of communities have as well their own public radio with a programming structured in a similar way. We could mention among others: Catalunya Radio (Cataluña), Canal Sur Radio (Andalucía), Radio Galega (Galicia), Radio Euskadi (País Vasco) y Radio 9 (Comunidad Valenciana).
THEMATIC RADIO
Although mainly associated with the same private or public business group tan the generalist ones, these broadcastings called radio temática are the favorites among a great amount of the population. We will mention here the classic ones called radiofórmulas, which broadcast mainly commercial music, being pop-rock – Cadena 40, Kiss FM, Cadena 100 o Europa FM- , or Spanish music –Radio Olé y Cadena Dial.
M80, related to cadena SER, mixes humor with music, being its audience mainly young people. Radio MARCA – It is the radio version of the most sold written press of the country- and Rock & Gol, belonging to the COPE business group, are the two sports broadcasts with most quality and popularity. We finalize our selection mentioning Intereconomía (it is easy to guess its main issue, economy) and also with the radiofórmulas “hermanas”, from the autonomic broadcasting groups.
Special mention deserve two public national channels, dedicated to the cultural and musical broadcasting; Radio 3 orientated to the pop culture in its most wide meaning, avoiding always its commercial and superficial side. And finally, Radio Clásica, which entails the finding and enjoying of those who seek for great and authentic classic music.
Summarizing, the Spanish radio offer is great and diverse. Everybody can enjoy it. And it is a great tool to learn Spanish.
